US Defense Dept may balk at Apple's PA Semi buy
27 Apr 2008 | 11:05 pm
With little incentive to continue selling PowerPC-based chips, the US Department of Defense may plead its case against Apple following the announcement of the $278 million buyout of startup chipmaker PA Semi. The acquisition appears to be focused on the company's intellectual property and talent for reducing chip power consumption rather than its p...

Getting to Know the Nabaztag Internet Rabbit
27 Apr 2008 | 4:36 pm
Shortly after I moved to France last year, Glenn Fleishman offered to introduce me to his contacts at a company called Violet that's based here in Paris. (And thus, by the way, it's pronounced "vee-oh-LAY.") Violet is best known as the developer of the Nabaztag Internet-enabled rabbit, and this product sounded sufficiently wacky that I was delighted to pay its creators a visit. It turned out they're located just down the street from me, about a ten-minute walk away, and I'd unknowingly passed their offices dozens of times already. So I set up an appointment, and Morgen and I met with Rafi…

Hand Coding HTML Is Still in Vogue
25 Apr 2008 | 9:52 am
Back in 1994, when I first learned to write HTML code for display in NCSA Mosaic, I thought, "There's got to be a better way." After all, I was coming off nearly a decade of typesetting and working with desktop publishing, starting with a Mac Plus and PageMaker 1.0 at my high school's newspaper. The code never bothered me; I had also learned in high school how to code on a Compugraphic typesetting system that used a similar method of embedded tags for formatting. But this was 1994! Surely, a graphical editor existed that would put a nice wrapper around HTML's intricacies. It's therefore…

Anyone running Windows XP under Boot Camp who plans to install Microsoft's Service Pack 3 when it is released later this month must install this Boot Camp Update first. The free update comes in three versions - one for Windows XP (215 MB), one for Windows Vista 32-bit (228 MB), and one for Windows Vista 64-bit (236 MB). Get More From the iPhone's Text Widget
24 Apr 2008 | 4:04 pm
[This article is based on a section of Ted's ebook, "Take Control of Your iPhone." Ted tweaked some parts to bring it fully up-to-date for TidBITS, and we reorganized it somewhat to make it fit better in the TidBITS format. And remember, through 29-Apr-08, the ebook is 50 percent off. -Tonya] You can use the iPhone's Text widget to send and receive text messages, also called SMS messages, the same messaging capability available via most mobile phones. The iPhone, however, makes text messaging much more convenient, because the Text widget displays the back and forth of a conversation, much the…

OLPC plagued by "stuck" keys
Steve
24 Apr 2008 | 6:03 pm
See here. These POS machines are crapping out because they used shitty parts in the keyboards and now the keys are getting stuck down and you can't get them unstuck. The freetards who bought them now find themselves stuck (sorry) with machines that don't work. Money quote: "Meanwhile, members of the forums are also reporting that by taking the keyboard out of the XO laptop and rubbing on the underlying sensor, you might fix the stuck key, but that's not a 100% solution."Somehow Intel must be to blame. Or Microsoft. How long till Double-N comes up with some new conspiracy theory?
The Goatberg Game: Fun for everyone
Steve
24 Apr 2008 | 5:41 pm
So apparently in the newsroom at the Wall Street Journal they pretty much all hate Goatberg and they have this game they play where every time Goatberg publishes a column they count how many times he uses the word "I" -- and it's usually a lot. They also count up other "me-related" words like me, mine and my. The joke at the Journal is that someday Walt will publish a column where every word is I.The funny part is how many of these references to himself are absolutely unnecessary. You could take them out and the sentence would not lose anything. Example from his column today about a new cell…

So Microsoft just put out their numbers and they suck. And I've seen some handwringing about how this must mean the economy is having problems but come on. We know what's having problems. It's Vista. And they're not going to have their next version until 2010, and that's according to the Borg itself. Reality is probaby worse. But let's assume they're right. That means we have two friggin years to keep smoking their weed and stealing their customers. As for that big economic slowdown, you may have noticed that it doesn't seem to be hurting us. Our earnings were up 36%, mostly thanks to Mac…

OLPC News reported that Bender was leaving in a huff because Nicholas Negroponte is going to use Windows XP on the green machine. Not so, Bender insists. In his exit statement Bender says two years of non-stop work (imagine that! two whole years) has wiped him out and he needs a break. So, um, he's quitting. Apparently the idea of a vacation did not occur to him. And that's it. His departure follows…

New iPod ad, now featuring silhouettes
Cory Bohon
27 Apr 2008 | 9:20 pm
Filed under: iPod Family It's been a long time since we've seen new iPod ads featuring the old silhouettes. Well, after taking a break from them, Apple has decided to release a new silhouette ad. It was shown on TV in the US today and can be seen by going to the Apple iTunes page and clicking "Watch the new ad" underneath the "Featured on iTunes" section. The music is apparently "Shut Up and Let Me Go" by UK band the Ting Tings. Thanks for the tip, Bren.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Well the Journal is reporting that Jobs spoke recently about Apple's relationship with Intel saying: "We have a great partnership with Intel. We expect that to continue forever." iPhone 101: typing accented characters

Filed under: iPod Family, Tips and tricks, iPhone, iPhone 101Over at MacTips they have a nice tip which I figured would make for a good iPhone 101. If you find yourself needing to type an accented character (acutes, graves, umlauts, etc.), all you have to do is hold down the relevant key for a couple of seconds and voilà a nice pop-up menu will appear with the available choices. The trick works for a number of different characters besides the vowels (e.g. 'z' and '?') and seems to function as well on the iPod touch.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Evernote for Mac, iPhone to make managing information overload easy

Why Did Apple Buy PA Semi?
danieleran
23 Apr 2008 | 9:50 pm
Daniel Eran Dilger Just ahead of its recession defying, record setting Q2 2008 earnings reports, Apple revealed plans to buy PA Semi, a chip designer specializing in processors based on IBM’s Power architecture. This news sparked a flurry of confusion from observers: why is Apple getting into the semiconductor business after partnering with Intel in its Mac systems, aligning with ARM licensees for its mobile WiFi iPhone platform, and particularly after decisively migrating away from PowerPC in 2006? Here’s why, and what this means for the future of the PC desktop, the Windows platform, and new emerging mobile markets. (more…)

iTunes Store May Capture One-Quarter of Worldwide Music by 2012

iTunes Store May Capture One-Quarter of Worldwide Music by 2012 Since its debut five years ago Monday, Apple’s iTunes Store has sold more than 4 billion songs and accounts for approximately 70 percent of digital music sold worldwide. In the next five years, it may well account for a staggering 28 percent of all music sold worldwide. By 2012, digital music is projected to account for 40 percent of music sold, according to InStat. If Apple holds onto its current market share, it will account for more than one-quarter of all music sales by its ninth birthday. Not bad for freeware.

Prevent iTunes from creating unnecessary clutter and cruft
Scott Haneda
18 Apr 2008 | 5:41 am
iTunes has gone from a simple music management application to a full-fledged media management tool. Gone are the days of just managing your music files, iTunes now takes on the roll of managing video, audio, and can even help organize pdf files. With all the power iTunes offers, it can become overwhelming. iTunes desires to be your default player for near all media types. An amusing audio clip from Family Guy or The Simpsons ends up getting imported into iTunes. This audio clip then relentlessly follows you around and makes its way to your iPod and iPhone on your next synchronization.
Customize your OS X clock and use it as a system lockup monitor
Scott Haneda
16 Apr 2008 | 3:35 am
It’s just a clock, how in the heck can it be used to tell you if your system is locked up? To be honest, it really can’t. However, I have used this tactic since way back in the OS 9 days, and it still works pretty darn well under OS X. First I will start with the basics, customizing the clock, what you can change, and why you may want to. After a small history lesson in how OS 9 was not as smartly multi-threaded as OS X, I can then explain just how you can use your clock as a visual aid to tell you if your computer is stuck. Read the rest of Customize your OS X clock and use it as…
Change the translucent menu bar setting
Scott Haneda
15 Apr 2008 | 5:52 am
With OS X Leopard 10.5, Apple brought forward a pretty strange change to the menu bar. The main menu bar had a mandatory translucency applied. This meant you could see your desktop image through the menu bar. The internets were quite upset about this “feature”. In my opinion, rightly so. Luckily, so much noise was made about the change, that as long as you have ran your software updates, you can finally turn this “feature” off. Which jailbreak to use?!?

It looks like Apple might have got the message in Europe that consumers gain nothing from carrier-locked iPhones, so Apple might be launching the next iteration of their mobile phone completely unlocked. ...The other reason I think Apple will continue with its locked iPhone model in the States is that pesky exclusive deal with ATT. ...If Apple penned a 1-year exclusive with ATT that's great, but I've never seen any mention of an ATT exclusive that short. ...But US consumers aren't demanding SIM-free phones and they're paying Apple (and ATT, for that matter) what Apple is asking for their…

Apple releases Boot Camp update and more
Michael
25 Apr 2008 | 7:32 am
Yesterday Apple released several updates for Boot Camp users as well as a Common Criteria Tools security verification utility. The Boot Camp updates are required if you want to upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista 64-bit on a Mac. Very little information is given to confirm exactly what the updates consist of…but that’s nothing new. You can find more information at Apple’s Boot Camp website.
EDGE Network trouble in Central TexasâŠanywhere else?
Michael
25 Apr 2008 | 6:31 am
For the last week the Edge network has been almost non-existent in Central Texas, where I live. It has been so sporadic that, at times, my wife and I can be sitting at a table together, and one of our iPhones will connect to the Internet, while the other one won’t be able to. I have confirmed with some other iPhone owners in the area that this is not an isolated incident to our phones, and appears to be an ongoing problem here in our service area. At&t is no help about the problem, treating like there is something wrong with our iPhones, and trying to send us to Apple tech support…

Reading PDFs on the Mac

These days everything is moving digital. Today there is digital signage (for advertisements), magazines post their articles on their Web sites often for free or in online subscriptions, newspapers are going completely Internet based and the list goes on and on. Another industry whose medium is making the transition is the book industry. The popular O’Reilly publishing company’s now has what’s called the Safari Books Online service, and the Pragmatic Bookshelf has every one of their books in PDF format and also pre-release their books (called Betas just like software). Typing Accents on the iPhone and iPod Touch
Omer Zach
26 Apr 2008 | 6:00 am
Gizmodo recently posted out that keyboard localization and accents in SMS messages can lead to bloodbaths, so I figured it would be useful to point out how easy it is to put accents over letters on the iPhone; maybe it will save some lives. The default view when the iPhone keyboard pops up on your screen shows a QWERTY keyboard, a shift key, a space bar, a delete key, a return key, and a button at the bottom-left that sends you off to find more symbols to type. All these buttons, yet there are no dedicated ones for accents. However, typing accents is quite possible. To add an accent to a…
Split Up Contacts List into Multiple Windows in Adium

26 Apr 2008 | 12:26 am
Adium just keeps getting better and better. While messing around with one of Adium’s features the other day, I found a way to split up your contact list into multiple sections, by group. To break up your contact list, hold Command and drag the header for any of your groups off of the window it is currently in. You can put two windows of groups together either by holding Command and dragging them back in the same way, or simply dragging (without Command) one of the windows under the other one until it snaps into place, and then letting go. Another way is to press Command-W while the…

On any given day, my desktop is filled with screenshots and images I’ve saved while writing tips. Often my desktop looks like the following: There are a couple of methods to get around saving images to the desktop–including saving them to the clipboard–but I actually really like this method. I have my bottom right corner of my screen set to show the desktop, so while writing a post I mouse over–grab whichever image I need and jump back into Ecto. The whole process takes about 2 seconds–it makes me extremely productive while writing tips. But when things get…

Sunday, April 27, 2008 -- 11:40 a.m. -- on my couch As I get ready to head to the office, I found a great article over at the New York Times about Apple's assault on BlackBerry and the reaction from the industry. Registration required, but a good read that really doesn't shed much new light, but it's interesting that so many people are looking at Apple's big move as a move against R.I.M. and not other companies. Check it out here. Hey, I look at it this way, RIM ... if this doesn't work out, there's always delicious Blackberry syrup. Mmmm, syrup. And let me know what you think in the…
The Flux Capacitor is what makes iPhone time travel possible

Friday, April 25, 2008 -- 4:03 p.m. -- at my desk I don't think Engadget got a hold of a Flux Capacitor -- or a DeLorean, for that matter -- but it claims to have some specific knowledge of what the next iPhone is going to look like. Maybe it does. I know I don't. The only way I see a conversation about the world's most secretive product taking place is in a garage 10 floors underground in shadows and silhouettes. But hey ... there's a chance the information is real. I'll post a link to Engadget, because it's entertaining reading. The site that the photo on Engadget is from is not one I…

We still have 8GB and 16GB iPhones in stock although availability of the 8GB device is now limited. The objectives of the price promotion were clearly to ensure the device remained competitive in this fast changing market and to maintain sales momentum beyond…

Interesting Finding in a Recent Apple Patent
EDIT-XTREEM
21 Apr 2008 | 8:47 pm
In a recent patent relating to mobile instant messaging, I came upon an interesting picture. In a couple of the pictures, it shows figure 164, which says Optical Sensor beside it. Why is this so interesting? Because it is on the front side of the device. I dugg a bit deaper and found a couple refernces to 164, including a part detailing a CCD (charge-coupled device), or basicially a camera on the front of the device. If this proves to be true, can we expect to see a camera on the front of the iPhone? It also goes on and talks about video conferencing. I think this further points to 3G in the…

Interview with Brian Amerige, of Extendmac

I recently had the chance to talk to Brian Amerige of Extendmac. Thanks to Brian for taking the time for this interview. Flow makes its public debut on April 4th, 9 Months after the first external alpha testing began. What are you most proud of in Flow? Yeah, that’s right. I had a smallish group of people for the early alphas, and then moved on to the significantly larger beta group. I certainly didn’t intend to (or want to) keep Flow in beta for so long, but due to time constraints (see http://blog.extendmac.com/a-glimpse-inside-one-year-later/ for what I mean by “time…
Product Idea: .Mac for the iPhone
EDIT-XTREEM
26 Mar 2008 | 6:51 pm
While working today, I thought of an interesting concept, .Mac for the iPhone. What if you could get an @iphone.com email, similar to those of the blackberry users’ (@*carrier*.blackberry.net)? Backup your iPhone from anywhere, access files on your Mac and upload your pictures directly from your camera roll to it? And Sync your calendars and contacts to it? Would you be more willing to pay the $99 a year for .Mac with these ideas included? I can tell you that I would. So why would Apple do this? To me, this idea is interesting, but it doesn’t appear to be so revolutionary. For…

Porta Party lets you party in a box
Alec Feld
25 Apr 2008 | 11:32 pm
Section: Apple NewsOne piece seemed to stand out at LA Art Weekend, the Porta Party. Although the box looks like a mobile toilet mixed with an older-generation iPod nano, it’s actually a box, that people can party in. Go in, plug in your iPod, and dance all you wish. The revolutionary anti-social device created by Nick Rodrigues allows you to party without other people, a party for yourself, by yourself, in a way. Sadly, if you need to use the toilet, the maker has not installed one inside of the device. However, the feature could technically become an accessory, add-on, or included in…
Apple granted three new iPhone input patents
Patrick Lutz
25 Apr 2008 | 10:53 pm
Section: Apple News, Updates, iPhone + Communications, iPhoneThe US Patent and Trademark Office published several of Apple’s patent approvals today, all of which relate to different aspects of the iPhone’s functionality. The first patent that has been approved deals with organization of the iPhone’s interface, mainly to reduce the clutter of adding too many visual elements to a document. The patent indicates the use of nested interface elements, for example, clicking a button to bring up a menu with operations that the user may perform. The second patent approved by the US…
Spend 5 bucks to get rid of Leopard annoyance, lose coffee for a day
Alec Feld
25 Apr 2008 | 9:45 pm
Section: Software + Apps, UtilitiesThere are few things that I truly hate about Leopard, but one of those few things are the confirmation dialog boxes when opening newly downloaded apps. A new app, iQuarantine X, seeks to not just change, but completely remove and prevent from that dialog box from ever showing up again. Although I’m betting this can be done with a simple Terminal command, you’ll have to shell out a hefty $5 for iQuarantine X. If the dialog boxes annoy you that much (and you download that many new apps), then you may want to spend the cash and just download it. Of…
